Applying for a social work job

Qualification

We find jobs for social workers, social pedagogues, educators, rehabilitation pedagogues, and others. Our job details always specify which qualification and registrations are needed - take a look at our jobs in social work.

Registration with the relevant UK Care Council

Registration with one of the respective care councils is a requirement for anyone wanting to work as a social worker in the UK. The UK has protection of title and this registration is a legal requirement.

In England this is currently the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In Scotland the Scottish Social Services Council (SCCC) is responsible for registration and in Wales it is the Care Council for Wales (CCW). Please check the specific guidelines for registration.

Important note: You cannot start a job as a social worker without being registered (some employers may consider you for interview if you have submitted your application for registration), so we strongly recommend starting your application for registration as soon as you can.

English language

As communication is one of the key tools for anyone working in social care, a good level of English is important. However, not every job requires the same English language skill. We are happy to give an indication on whether we feel your English is at the required level, or whether it needs improvement.

Stay for 2 years

Most of our jobs are permanent jobs, and we ask that you are open to stay in it for at least 2 years. Some employers are willing to put energy and resources into providing induction and training to help you settle in your new role. It also takes some time for you to adjust to a new job and a new country.

Experience

Although direct experience is usually required, some employers will consider transferable skills. Experience from internships or practical placements and voluntary work may also be relevant.
